Apple lovers have been busy talking about rumors concerning a new MacBook Air with mini-LED, which sources claim will be released midway through 2022.
Speculation about this mysterious laptop has been circulating for months, and a new report obtained by MacRumors from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo shed some more light on possibly colorful specs and upgrades.
The most recent MacBook Air lineup runs on an Apple-made M1 silicon chip the company boasts to be its fastest CPU yet — but if the rumors are correct, the new MacBook Air will be even faster. Kuo concedes its not yet clear whether the new laptop will be released as a replacement for the latest MacBook Air lineup or if it will be marketed as a higher-end model, but the rumored new features are certainly reason for excitement.
While Kuo is generally a pretty trustworthy leaker of Apple insider information, all rumors must be taken with a grain of salt — we should move forward in our assumptions with a healthy amount of caution.
Vibrant Colors to Choose From
Kuo’s new report claims the upcoming MacBook Air will be released in multiple colors with an all-new design from its predecessor. Those sentiments are shared by Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman as well as Apple leaker Jon Prosser, who says the colors will be vibrant and similar to the selection offered with the iMac released in 2021.
The MacBook Air was described by Kuo as having a similar form factor as the upcoming MacBook Pro lineup, built with flatter edges and a mini-LED display. This tech would make for a lighter and thinner design, though the size is speculated to match the current generation with a 13.3-inch screen. The laptop is also rumored to have significantly higher display quality and high color contrast thanks to the employment of mini-LED display technology.
Improved Speed and Technical Performance
New colors aren’t the only change being made to the new MacBook Air — sources also speculate that we can expect an upgraded silicon chip, making for even faster performance than the latest lineup run by an M1 chip. The performance of Apple’s self-made chip has received high praise from Apple fans, so we can only imagine how speedy and reliable an upgrade will turn out to be.
Apple’s decision to begin making their own silicon chips was bold, and if the rumors are true that the M1 chip is being moved up to an M2, Apple could have the chance to push themselves even further ahead of the competition in terms of performance.
Mysterious Price Tag
While we are still waiting on confirmation about a set price point, Kuo speculates the new MacBook Air will either be released at the same price as the current M1-run model, or Apple would lower the price of the older model once its newer and more expensive counterpart is released.
For now we can operate under the assumption that the new model will likely not be any cheaper than the latest $999 lineup.
As a result of the global semiconductor shortage, we likely won’t see these MacBook Air plans coming into fruition for some time — but hopefully more details will be released in the second half of 2021 that can offer some more insight on what price range we can expect.
