Overwatch 2 had a smaller presence at BlizzConline than some of Blizzard Entertainment’s other games — in part because the game is still a long way off — but the Overwatch team didn’t show up empty handed. During the show, Blizzard gave a behind-the-scenes look at the sequel to Overwatch, including new looks for that game’s heroes and villains.
Blizzard highlighted design overhauls for four characters: McCree, Pharah, Reaper, and Widowmaker. In some cases, the changes aren’t particularly drastic; McCree still has his signature cowboy hat and serape, but he, like other Overwatch 2 characters, has a slightly more technical look to him. Oh, and his beard’s a bit longer — everyone’s beards are longer, apparently.
And then there’s Widowmaker. As you can see in the gallery below, Blizzard tried a few more dramatic looks for the sniper. Blizzard ultimately went with something a bit more “cyberpunk,” according to lead character concept artist Arnold Tsang.
Widowmaker’s also sporting a braid now ... and some questionable armor plating.
Pharah retains her full body armor, but has a more translucent visor to show more emotion, Tsang said, and a bit more white in her color scheme. As for Reaper, he retains the same silhouette and edgelord style, but now has a more silver to his look. But otherwise, the heroes and villains in Overwatch 2 retain many elements of their original designs.
Overwatch 2 does not yet have a release date, but Activision Blizzard said not to expect the game in 2021.
